The St Kitts and Nevis Robotics Association (SKNRA) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization founded on the 13th of January 2020 and was established on the 27th of March 2020. The association’s primary objectives are ultimately actions that encapsulate its motto ‘Inspiring Young Minds through STEAM’.
SKNRA prides itself on the ideology that well-rounded, innovative individuals can be crafted out of all youths residing locally, regionally and internationally by developing their creativity and problem-solving skills to prepare them for global opportunities within the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Through Interactive Challenges, Research & Development and Volunteerism activities SKNRA will become the leading force of nurturing the latent talents of Caribbean youth and present all members and participants with circumstances which will lead them to a future of numerous scholarship opportunities, accredited qualifications and the chance to enter internationally recognized competitions within STEAM areas.
As the first of its kind in the Caribbean, SKNRA aims to set a standard within the region that regulates the production and research of items relating to Information Technology and Computer Science. The organization not only will encourage the establishments of other Robotics/Information Technology Associations but also intends to create legislations which will protect the Intellectual Property rights of individuals’ research projects. In this way, we are hopeful that the Caribbean can reach a higher level of regional integration through the advancement of STEAM, in turn improving the scale of technology in all member states.
In the short-term, SKNRA wishes to raise funds for the development of the 2020 St Kitts and Nevis Robotics Team which will participate in the 2020 First Global Challenge. The First Global Challenge strives to create an international platform on which youths are given the opportunity to explore the realms of how they can use their skillset and knowledge on STEM to provide solutions to real world challenges the world is facing today through the means of hosting an Annual International Robotics Tournament where persons from all nations are invited to participate. St Kitts and Nevis has participated for the past 3 years and has always returned with multiple accolades including currently being the 1st in the OECS islands we strive to keep this track record running with even more achievements.
In the long-term, SKNRA has 5 main projects that implement its main objectives into reality.
The Robotics After School Programme (RASP) provides youths around the ages 10-16 with an avenue that will assist each individual in building confidence, character and acquire the skills needed to grow into productive, civic minded and responsible adults. In addition, each youth will become proficient enough to compete in the First Global Robotics Competition – Lego League.
The Public Outreach Programme (POP) promotes the act of volunteerism within the student community. By assisting those who are disadvantaged in life, this programme hopes to bring awareness to students on the various lifestyles that accumulate in the communities they live in and inspire them to live their lives as caring and committed individuals.
SKNRA also sets out to create Robotics competitions on national and regional levels that rival the existence of the First Global Challenge. At the St Kitts Nevis National Robotics Challenge (SKNNRC), Secondary Students within the federation of St Kitts and Nevis will be invited to participate within an annual robotics tournament where they will be provided with the necessary materials, resources and training to build a fully-functional robot before the competition period.
Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Robotics Challenge (OECS RC) and Caribbean Community Robotics Challenge (CARICOM RC) will follow the same premise of the National Robotics Challenge as secondary students from across the region will be invited to an annual event hosted by one of the member states once it is proven that the island has the resources necessary to adopt the necessary tournament stadium.
